He got his junior black belt at the age of twelve and took part in his first South African All styles tournament that year. He was captain of that Junior team and got a 4^th place in fighting. Sensei Dirk took part in Karate competitions till the age of 37 and became SA Champion twice and also won a silver and bronze medal at the 2007 WSKF World Champs in Japan.
